Jill’s life
This was adapted from the order of service and summarises the eulogy.
1945 January 15. Born in Croydon to Zena and Frederick Simpson.
1951. Visited Paris.
1956. Coloma Convent School, Croydon, studied for GCEs.
1962 – 1963. Teaching post in Champagne-sur-Loue, Jura.
1964 – 1967. Croydon Technical College, studied for A-levels.
1964 – 1967. Croydon Central Library, assistant in lending library.
1968 – 1969. Manchester College of Commerce, library studies.
1969. Comparative study of libraries in the UK and the Netherlands
1969. Practical experience in the Royal Library in the Hague.
1970. Purley Library, Croydon, reference librarian.
1971 – 1974. Croydon Central Library,
assistant reference librarian.
1971. March 17. Married Ian. Made home in Croydon.
1974. Neil born.
1977. Moved from Croydon to Exeter.
1978. Kate born.
1978 – 1992. Worked for University of Exeter Library
1978. Exeter College of Art and Design, organising slide collection
1987. Exeter Reference Library, cataloguing HMSO material
1988. University of Exeter School of Education Library,
cataloguing onto Libertas system.
1988 – 1993. Local Government Library, County Hall,
producing press monitor.
1992 – 2005. Exeter Medical Library, deputy librarian,
developed website.
2003. Neil’s wedding in Sri Lanka.
2005 – 2019. Retired, travelled Europe in Modestine,
2012. Shingles on the optic nerve.
2020 – 2021. Covid and lockdown.
2022. September. Diagnosed with dementia.
2024. March 20. Final journey to Woodhayes
2024. July 2 10:15. Died with Ian holding her hand.
